The international mother language day has been observed on February 21st since UNESCO declared it on November 17, 1999. This day has a wonderful backstory. Bangladesh was colonized by Pakistan in 1952 and became known as East Pakistan. Urdu will be the state language of Pakistan, the Pakistani rulers stated at the time. That means that even East Pakistanis must speak Urdu in government offices, universities, and other settings. The decision was not well received by students and the wider public. They began a large rally near Dhaka University. There were also a few persons, including students, killed by the police. Salam, Jabbar, Rafik, Barkat, and more names Shaheeds are most famous for being the language revolutions’ martyrs. To honor them, the people built the first Shaheed Minar. The government then reversed its decision and declared Bengali to be the official language of East Pakistan. This is the first and only time in human history that a life has been given up for the sake of a language. And the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has shown sufficient respect for this. The International Mother Language Day is celebrated on February 21st. Every country has notable accomplishments in which it can take pride. Our language day is a national event that has been a huge success. Following the recognition, our language day is now celebrated around the world as International Mother Language Day. In 1948, the ruling authorities in West Pakistan declared Urdu to be the official language of Pakistan and attempted to force it on the Bangla-speaking majority. As the protests escalated in strength, the ruling authority implemented Section 144 across the country. However, when students, politicians, and the general public staged a procession in the Dhaka University area, the police opened fire on the crowd. Rafiq, Jabbar, Salam, Barkat, and Shafiq were martyred as a result. On November 17, 1999, UNESCO declared that the day would be commemorated worldwide. Our language day now has international recognition thanks to UNESCO. The 21st of February has been observed as National Language Day in our country since 1952. Our martyrs are remembered. We are the only country in the world that sacrifices people’s lives for the sake of their mother tongue. It is a great gift to be able to speak in your mother tongue. The most Merciful Almighty Allah has bestowed a mother tongue upon each and every caste, creed, and color, according to the holy Quran. Mother language is so significant that individuals in a country use it to express their ideas, thoughts, sentiments, emotions, and so on. However, it is an irony of fate that Pakistan’s rulers attempted to impose Urdu as the country’s sole official language. However, the people of our country spoke out against this illegal decision. On February 21, 1952, some of our brave boys stepped forward and gave their lives for the sake of our mother tongue. Among them are Rafiq, Salam, Barkat, and Jabbar. Since then, the day has been known as the Shaheed Dibash. Every year, we commemorate this day with solemnity and pay our respects to them. It gives us great pleasure that UNESCO has designated February 21 as International Mother Language Day, which will be commemorated worldwide in honor of the martyrs sacrifices in restoring Bangla to its due place.
