A large number of student’s failure in English in the public examinations is a matter of great concern. In our country English is taught as a compulsory subject from class one to class twelve. But the rate of failure is a matter of shame. Experts say that there are some specific factors for this failure. The main reason is that English is a foreign language. Most of the students do not know the right way to learn English .To them English is unpleasant and fearful. Besides, most of the teachers are not properly trained or skilled. They cannot make the lessons interesting. Communicative system has been introduced but it is not practice communicative English. The textbooks for different classes are not standard.
Moreover, the question pattern in public examinations encourage cramming not learning. For these reasons, so many students fail in English. But we have to get rid of this problem. For this effective steps must be taken. Teachers of all leaves should be trained properly. They should find out the right method of teaching to make students interested. In English classes, teachers should create such environment in the classroom so that students become interested to speak in English. Besides, defective syllabus must be changed. At the same time, examination system must be changed so that students do not depend on cramming rather they use the language properly to express their thoughts. Teacher should also try to remove students fear and bitterness towards this subject. English language club and language labs can be introduced in all educational institutions to encourage the students. By taking all these steps, we can hope that failure in English can be stopped. Along with government all concerned should come forward in this regard.

পাবলিক পরীক্ষায় ইংরেজিতে বিপুল সংখ্যক শিক্ষার্থীর ফেল করা খুবই উদ্বেগের বিষয়। আমাদের দেশে প্রথম শ্রেণি থেকে দ্বাদশ শ্রেণি পর্যন্ত ইংরেজি বাধ্যতামূলক বিষয় হিসেবে পড়ানো হয়। কিন্তু ব্যর্থতার হার লজ্জার বিষয়। বিশেষজ্ঞরা বলছেন যে এই ব্যর্থতার জন্য কিছু নির্দিষ্ট কারণ রয়েছে। এর প্রধান কারণ হল ইংরেজি একটি বিদেশী ভাষা। বেশিরভাগ শিক্ষার্থী ইংরেজি শেখার সঠিক উপায় জানে না। তাদের কাছে ইংরেজি অপ্রীতিকর এবং ভয়ের। এছাড়া অধিকাংশ শিক্ষকই সঠিকভাবে প্রশিক্ষিত বা দক্ষ নন। তারা পাঠকে আকর্ষণীয় করতে পারে না। যোগাযোগ ব্যবস্থা চালু করা হয়েছে কিন্তু এটি যোগাযোগমূলক ইংরেজি চর্চা নয়। বিভিন্ন শ্রেণীর পাঠ্যবই মানসম্মত নয়।
অধিকন্তু, পাবলিক পরীক্ষায় প্রশ্নের প্যাটার্ন শেখার নয় ক্র্যামিংকে উৎসাহিত করে। এসব কারণে অনেক শিক্ষার্থী ইংরেজিতে ফেল করে। তবে আমাদের এই সমস্যা থেকে মুক্তি পেতে হবে। এজন্য কার্যকর পদক্ষেপ নিতে হবে। সব পাতার শিক্ষকদের সঠিকভাবে প্রশিক্ষণ দিতে হবে। তাদের উচিত শিক্ষার্থীদের আগ্রহী করে তোলার জন্য শিক্ষাদানের সঠিক পদ্ধতি খুঁজে বের করা। ইংরেজি ক্লাসে, শিক্ষকদের উচিত শ্রেণিকক্ষে এমন পরিবেশ তৈরি করা যাতে শিক্ষার্থীরা ইংরেজিতে কথা বলতে আগ্রহী হয়। এছাড়া ত্রুটিপূর্ণ সিলেবাস পরিবর্তন করতে হবে। একই সাথে, পরীক্ষা পদ্ধতি পরিবর্তন করতে হবে যাতে শিক্ষার্থীরা ক্র্যামিংয়ের উপর নির্ভর না করে বরং তারা তাদের চিন্তাভাবনা প্রকাশের জন্য সঠিকভাবে ভাষা ব্যবহার করে। শিক্ষকেরও উচিত শিক্ষার্থীদের এই বিষয়ের প্রতি ভয় ও তিক্ততা দূর করার চেষ্টা করা। শিক্ষার্থীদের উৎসাহিত করার জন্য সকল শিক্ষা প্রতিষ্ঠানে ইংরেজি ভাষা ক্লাব ও ভাষা ল্যাব চালু করা যেতে পারে। এই সমস্ত পদক্ষেপ গ্রহণ করে, আমরা আশা করতে পারি যে ইংরেজিতে ব্যর্থতা বন্ধ করা যেতে পারে। এ ব্যাপারে সরকারের পাশাপাশি সংশ্লিষ্ট সবাইকে এগিয়ে আসতে হবে।
