New sporting director Deco has revealed that it was “impossible” to sign Neymar this summer due to Barcelona’s financial situation.
Neymar officially joined Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal this weekend, with the club agreeing to part with €90m (£77.6m) for the 31-year-old’s services. As well as signing Neymar for that huge fee, the club have also agreed to pay the player £2.5m-a-week on a two-year deal.
Barcelona were linked with a move for the Brazilian in the summer transfer window, but despite offers to the club by Paris Saint-Germain and his representatives, manager Javi Hernández vetoed a potential move to play Neymar, acknowledging that he was “Neymar”. In our plans” in June.
Deco has now finally shed more light on the club’s decision not to make a move for Neymar, admitting to Globo Esporte that the club simply cannot afford the player.

“Everyone knows that at the moment, unfortunately, with our financial situation, such a signing was impossible,” revealed Deco. “We needed an understanding with PSG or an agreement with Saudi Arabia, which did not happen.
“It was a situation that needed to be economically viable for us, but it was never possible due to the club’s financial situation.”
Neymar enjoyed the best years of his career at Barcelona, scoring 105 goals in 186 games across a four-year spell and winning a famous treble in 2015. Neymar signed a two-year mega money deal with Al Hilal
